If seeing is believing...

Giotto di Bondone and Leonardo da Vinci

On 18 February at 6 pm,was the screening of a documentary titled The Great Artists. Art historian Tim Marlow explored the lives and works of some of the greatest artists in Western art. Marlow elucidated the importance of Giotto di Bondone in kick starting the Renaissance with his naturalistic and emotive treatment of medieval Christian iconography. Leaping forward, Marlow bared Leonardo da Vinci’s genius not just in art but in science also to show his towering contribution to the development of art in Europe.

Welcome to Lila. An arts studio born out of the idea that being playful leads to the rediscovery of our inner self . By this we mean playing with, and discussing about images, music, prose, poetry, cinema and other allied arts. In other words, at Lila you are invited to converse with your soul and to dialogue with other souls as well.

Housed in Sunaparanta - Goa Centre for the Arts, Lila is open only on Wednesdays between 11 am to 7 pm and will host planned sessions from 5.30 to 7 pm. The rest of the time, visitors are encouraged to use Lila in as playful a manner as possible. Do contact us to be added to our mailing list.

Sunaparanta - Goa Centre for the Arts is a Dattaraj V. Salgaocar initiative with an aim to preserve the artistic and cultural legacies of Goa; to encourage innovative work in the visual arts (individual, group and organisational); to liaise between the Goan art community and the national and international art communities; and to provide mentoring and resource support to art students and others who want to learn about art.

Alok Johri at Lila
On Wednesday, February 11, Lila reopened with a riot of colour. Enter the world of Alok Johri: painter, photographer and graphic designer. A world where passion and paint coalesce to form personal configurations of self-discovery. Alok shared his creative process from 5.30 pm onwards.

A note from Alok
Three years back when I moved to Goa, first thing I did was: visiting galleries, bookshops, going for concerts and plays. This is how I go about getting to know a place by its people, culture and make myself feel at home. I made friends and one of them, after knowing my interests and inclination towards art + culture suggested that I should attend Lila, an initiative of Apurva Kulkarni, an artist himself. The way this friend described Lila, I did not want to miss the next one. Unfortunately he got to know that Lila is not happening anymore, no reason found.
Damn!!! I thought I missed something real good. But life has its own way of surprising you.

Few weeks back Apurva visited my studio to review my work and at the end of it, he asked if I would be interested in talking about my work at Lila. There's no way I would have had second thought about it. I grabbed the opportunity.

I really enjoyed my time at Lila on 11th Feb. but what impressed me most was how between 5.30pm - 5.45pm enthusiasts started filling the room, they walked in with a certain vibe/energy that told me what Lila meant to all of them. I talked about myself, my work and my life. They heard me patiently. There were few questions from them but they made me think. The Lila audience gave me a big high!

11th Morning I walked in with a big blank canvas and no expectations. And come evening I walked out with a rich canvas and an overwhelming experience.

Thank you Apurva!
Thank you everyone at Lila!
Thank you Goa - I feel at home!!
